Tagging gear with NFC or QR: what actually works in a club

Identifying every item is the prerequisite for any inventory. The question is with what, and there is a fair amount of misplaced technological enthusiasm here.
I have tried all three options on club gear. This is what holds up.
Printed QR: the one that usually wins
Cost: cents per label. Reading: any phone, no app. Durability: good if you choose the right substrate.
For most clubs, a QR on a polyester or laminated vinyl label solves the problem. You print it at home, anyone reads it with their camera, and it depends on no special hardware.
Its real limits: it scratches under heavy abrasion, and it does not read well with mud, gloves or poor light — which are exactly the conditions mountain gear comes back in.
A trick that works: print the code as text underneath the QR too. The day the QR will not scan, somebody can type CLB-C-014 by hand. It sounds obvious and almost nobody does it.
NFC: better experience, more friction than it looks
Cost: between €0.30 and €1 per tag, depending on format. Reading: hold the phone near it, no aiming or focusing. Durability: excellent in encapsulated form.
NFC is clearly superior in real use: it works with mud, in low light and with one hand occupied. For group returns — fifteen people handing gear back at once — the difference is noticeable.
Two problems worth knowing before you buy:
Metal interferes. A standard NFC tag stuck on a carabiner or an anchor simply will not read. On-metal tags with a ferrite layer exist and work, but they cost more and are thicker.
Not all phones cooperate equally. On Android it is seamless. On iPhone it works with well-formed NDEF tags, but the experience depends on the version and sometimes requires opening the app. If your club has a mix of devices, test with two or three real phones before buying a hundred tags.
Engraving or permanent marking: for what will not take a sticker
On heavily used metal hardware, labels eventually come off. That is where laser engraving or low-impact stamping is the durable option.
A warning: nothing is engraved or drilled on textile gear or helmets. On textile, marking is done with a pen approved by the manufacturer, in the area the manufacturer specifies. An industrial marker or a solvent can degrade the fibres without leaving a visible trace.
What I would do
A normal club, starting out:

And the QR or NFC on top of that identification, not instead of it. The human-readable identifier is the one that survives a label falling off, a flat battery or a change of system.
The underlying mistake
The temptation is to pick the technology first and then work out what to do with it. The useful order is the reverse: if your problem is not knowing what gear you have, cheap QR solves it today. If your problem is that group returns are a twenty-minute mess, NFC pays for itself.
And if you do not have the inventory set up yet, start there: tagging gear that is not recorded anywhere achieves nothing.
